Why Getting Ready Takes So Long

A shiny shell. A funny fish. A swirling current. For a young child, every bright thing calls out “Look at me!” and the job at hand gets lost. It isn’t laziness. The ability to choose what to pay attention to grows slowly through early childhood.

In the story, Zuli reaches for everything at once, nothing gets done, and the morning slips away. “Why did focusing feel so bad?”

Point Your Flashlight at One Thing

Shelly the Turtle doesn’t ask Zuli to ignore the sparkles. She offers a picture: your attention is a flashlight with one beam. Point it at one thing, finish it, then point it at the next.

Zuli picks the bag by the door first, then snacks, then a towel, and getting ready finally comes together. The refrain gives your child words to use: “I’ll point it here, just ONE thing there, nice and steady, nice and slow.”

At the back: a note for grown-ups on how attention develops, conversation starters, and activities such as making a “focus flashlight” at home.

What Your Child Takes Away

Sparkle & Shine turns “pay attention” into something a child can see and do, and gives you a gentle phrase for mornings, clean-up time and homework.

Name the Distraction

Children learn that sparkles will always be there, and that noticing them is normal.

The Flashlight Tool

One beam, one thing: a simple picture for choosing where attention goes.

One Step at a Time

Finishing one small task before the next builds momentum and confidence.

Understood, Not Scolded

The story treats a child who struggles to focus with kindness, not criticism.

From the author

Why I Wrote Sparkle & Shine

I’m Ujjwal Ganesh, father of two daughters. Our mornings used to be full of shiny distractions and half-finished tasks, and “focus!” never helped. A flashlight, though, was something my girls could picture.

Sparkle & Shine is Book 1 of Little Brains, Big World, where Zuli the Octopus learns one everyday thinking skill per book: focusing, waiting, switching and remembering.
