Website migration SEO

Move to a new site, platform or domain without losing the traffic it took years to earn.

The switch is an evening's work. The recovery takes months, and most plans only budget for the switch.

This is for you if

  • A new website is being built, and nobody has mentioned redirects.
  • You're changing domain, brand name or CMS.
  • You're merging two websites into one.
  • A regulator, a rebrand or a parent company has set a date you can't move.
  • You've already moved and traffic dropped. Start with a recovery diagnosis instead.

What you get

  1. A baseline, saved before anything changes

16 months of Search Console data, visits and conversions by channel, rankings, page speed and your most-linked pages.

  2. A complete URL list

It draws on crawls, sitemaps, Search Console, analytics, backlinks and server logs, including PDFs and images.

  3. A redirect map

One old URL to its closest new URL, every row checked by a person and tested on staging.

  4. A pre-launch check of the new site

Internal links, canonicals, hreflang, structured data, sitemap, robots and noindex, forms and tracking.

  5. Launch-day support

Redirects tested, Google's Change of Address and Bing's Site Move submitted, and tracking checked with a test form.

  6. Monitoring after launch

Daily at first, then weekly, with a short report at each stage.

  7. An off-site list

Every email template, profile, ad and PDF that still shows the old address, each with an owner.

How it works

  1. Preparation

Baseline, URL list, redirect map and staging tests.

  2. Launch day

Redirects go live, the top pages and files are tested, and the change is submitted to Google and Bing.

  3. Early checks

Broken pages, redirect chains and indexing, checked daily at first.

  4. Steady state

Weekly checks on rankings, impressions and enquiries against the baseline.

Brought in late? I led a bank's domain move with 10 days to prepare. It's tight, but it can be done.

Proof

A bank's domain move against a regulator's deadline

The bank had to move to a .bank.in domain, and we had about 10 days to prepare. Around 800 of its 1,000 most-clicked addresses were PDFs: application forms and rate sheets. Each one needed its own redirect. The new domain launched on 29 September 2025 and appeared in brand searches within 2 days. Visits for April to June 2026 were 28% higher than a year earlier. From January to June 2026, 92% of Apply Now forms came from organic search.

A real estate relaunch where every URL changed

Google visits dipped to 2,764 in the first week, from about 3,400 the week before, then recovered. Organic visits for April to September 2025 were 45% above the same months of 2024. Between June and September, 1,782 people who arrived from Google sent an enquiry.

What I won't do

  • Redirect old pages to the homepage. Google treats that as a lost page.
  • Use a "we have moved" page with a delayed forward. Google reads it as temporary.
  • Change URLs, design and content all at once if it can be avoided. One change at a time keeps problems traceable.
  • Promise there will be no dip. Some movement is normal while Google rechecks every URL. The aim is a short, shallow dip.

Questions

When should I bring you in?

Before design starts, ideally, while URLs can still change.

Will our traffic drop?

Usually a little, at first. In SALT.agency's study of 1,052 domain migrations (June 2026), half took more than 304 days to recover. Preparation is what puts a site in the faster half.

Do you work with our developer?

Yes. I write the redirect map and the checks, your developer puts them live, and I test before and after.

Which platforms?

WordPress, Laravel and PHP, Shopify and custom systems. Redirects can live on the server, in the CMS or at the CDN.

How long do redirects stay?

At least a year, ideally for good. Keep renewing the old domain and its SSL certificate. A lapsed domain can be bought by anyone.

What about ChatGPT and other assistants?

They learn your address from pages and profiles across the web. Update those places, then check each month what the assistants say your address is.

Tell me your launch date.

Even when it's close, there is usually time to protect the pages that matter most.
